Morgen Witzel is a Fellow of the Centre for Leadership Studies at the University of Exeter Business School. He is a writer, lecturer, and consultant on management, and is particularly well known as a writer on the history of management theory and practice. He is the author of twenty books, including Management History: Text and Cases and A History of Management Thought. He also edited the Biographical Dictionary of Management, and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Management History

Malcolm Warner is currently Professor and Fellow Emeritus, Wolfson College, Cambridge, and the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. He is the author and editor of over fifty books on management, many of which have been translated, as well as of numerous articles, essays, and reviews on the subject. He has been the Editor-in-chief of the International Encyclopedia of Business and Management, vols. 1–8, London: Thomson Learning, 2nd edition, 2002. He is also Co-Editor of the Asia Pacific Business Review. He has, in addition, been a frequent Visiting Academic at many campuses and business schools across the world.

Abstract

This book examines and evaluates the contributions that a number of seminal figures, past and present, have made to the theory of management, by providing in-depth, up-to-date, and detailed scholarly analysis of their ideas and influence. Concurrent with the increasing complexity of the field of management, there is the need to re-examine the foundations from which its theories have advanced. Contributions by management and management history scholars explore the origins of each thinker or school of thought and their ideas, and discuss their significance and influence in a broader framework. This volume contextualizes each theorist and their theories, analysing their actions, interactions, and re-actions to contemporary events and to each other. It proceeds in three parts: pioneers of management thinking, including Frederick Taylor, Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, Henri Fayol, Mary Parker Follett, George Elton Mayo, Lyndall Urwick, and Chester Barnard; post-war theorists, such as the Tavistock Group, Tom Burns, Joan Woodward, W. Edwards Deming, J. M. Duran, Edith Penrose, Peter Drucker, and Herbert Simon; and the later phase of Business School theorists, including Alfred Chandler, the Aston Studies researchers, James March, Richard Cyert, Geert Hofstede, John Paul Kotter, Henry Mintzberg, Michael Porter, Ikujiro Nonaka, Sumantra Ghoshal, and C. K. Prahalad. This book provides information for anyone interested in how and why management ideas have emerged, and the ways in which they are currently developing and are likely to evolve in the future.
